11 feb 2008...Why is technology against me?...Yeah, so, I am attempting to make life a little easier by uploading the videos on this here website onto youtube...At the same time, I am trying to upload some live recordings I had made, off of my Microtrack mp3 recorder...Also have been trying to examine the website and discover the reason why it has, recently, become so slow in uploading.......WELL, if youtube hands me one more "page has expired" message and requires me to retype one more piece of information for another fourth time, I think I may cry...And, despite several 40-minute waits on the telephone, a few emails, and days of tinkering, Microtrack is still unable to determine why my new compact flash card just isn't meshing with the recorder...Further, turns out that it is my webhosting provider, who recently changed their platform (i can only guess, for my convenience), who is causing this site to load up as if it were being brought to you, 'web-surfy surferton,' in a lead oxen cart being dragged by two whiny, tiny, tin oxen...One of those days when nothing seems to be going my way...Sometimes trying to make life easier is just too much trouble.

________________________________________________

09 feb 2008...alright, already!...(taken directly from journal, written on the Q train from Brklyn to 42nd St) I am trying to spend just one day...just one twenty-four hour period...without seeing the face or hearing the name of Britney Spears...If you have been attempting to do the same, or even now are just considering the idea, then, I apologize that I have ruined this day for you...Of course, it is common knowledge that our obsession lies deep-rooted in the very things that we fear in ourselves...the fall of our own little private empire...There, but by the grace of GOD, go we all, like Britney...A self-hatred and a self-sabotage lead us to the place where we stop recognizing our own life...And, if we had never known the purpose of our lives, now we could be pretty sure that we have none... Dare any one of us pretend that a Britney-inspired path of destruction were unattainable, and he would just have to be the blinded optimist, the ignorant shut-in, or the complete liar...Sometimes, a Britney-esque path seems like an option...When trying at life hurts so much every day, and you walk amongst dozens of reasons every day why you are still not good enough, heading down the Spearstraat seems like a way to say, "F&%$ it," with a bang...But, really? What about the rest of us...Seeing her all-too-familair face does nothing to calm my neuroses or assuage my own self-loathing...Rather, it just reminds me how ridiculous we are, and how many minutes a day are full of wasted breath...How the reserve energy that our lunch at McDonald's leaves us with skips all possibility of any kind of self-betterment and converts itself right into piss, moans, and maybe-deniable joy in being better than someone who used to be better than us...Well, today, I am bloated and achey, and feeling frustrated from having been shut in the studio for hours and hours, so I think I might go on a bender tonight...pop some pills, slug back a few, shave my head, drop a couple babies, and call it a night around 9.30...That should fix me good...Great, it's just been announced that it's "showtime" on the Q-train...

02 jan 2008...TWO THOUSAND EIGHT!...So, I have yet to speak to one person who had made several HUGE life changes during 2007 and actually is finding themselves where they want to be. 2007 was all about steps...baby steps...getting us somewhere, but leaving us still wanting for something more, and wondering why we didn't already hold that something in our control like a proverbial, malleable clay lump.
So, I am left both disappointed in 2007, and reeeeeally optimistic for the fruitfulness that 2008 promises to offer. Even the cats have turned over new attitudes since the stroke of midnight, and are snuggling up like never before, depending on each other, and trusting that good things will come from their bonding. Yeah, ok, so I am completely anthropomorphisizing, but I think that is what this week was all about. Things have been tough, all around...for all of my closest friends...2007 has CARRIED! But, fear not....We snuggled together extra close over this past week, whether physically together or just in thoughts and texts, and good things are to come. We have already taken the most difficult steps in making these changes in our lives, and even if they have still left us flat on our asses, they have faced us in the right direction. All we need to now do is beileve a little harder, ask Norma for guidance (if you know her, you know she will turn it for you!), and just go ahead. I am going to try to listen to these words myself, too...Oh, and to Frank and Cecilli, NO BULLSHIT CHICKEN WINGS!!
Here are some pics from Christmas in arctic Buffalo and New Years in tropical NYC!!!! Love and best wishes to all in 2008!

14 dec 2007...Happy Holidays!...I can't wait to be with my family in Buffalo for Christams...Guaranteed awful weather notwithstanding, it is always a beautiful and exciting time - my brother and I killing time at the Guitar Center, reminiscing in the kitchen with my brothers, Trevor and Tyler, while wolfing down cookie after glorious cookie...Here is a little sneak peek Trevor sent to me of the Christmas tree...

Click here to check out a little video of the cats dancing as Christmas elves, AND you can create your own video using whatever photos you may have...It may ask you to download Adobe Flash Player 9, but it was a short process and never ended up downloading, so don't worry about having to download anything nasty or harmful - it's ok....And, sidenote to Liana, this may or may not put me one step closer to being a crazy cat lady - Frankly, we have the little beasts anyway, so we might as well have fun with them...

________________________________________________

10 dec 2007...Rocking on the subway...So, the subway is always loads of fun...It was on the NYC news tonight that the girls in the lower video are in trouble wth MTA for performing "non-transit-related" actions on the subway, and taping a subway POLE DANCE under a dare! The man in the top video is in no trouble that I know of, and was apparently doing his dance without the threat of a dare.

08 dec 07...So, we shaved the cats...
I'm sorry, did you just say, "shave the cats?"...Yes, that's right; four cats out of a harem of five. So, in the Brooklyn apartment is Katie, Frank, and myself, and a combined five cats. Sam is the only tiny one to be seen, with the other four weighing at sumo-levels of 15.5 (Brandon), 16.5(The Gorda), 17.5(Jonah), and a whopping 18.5(little FJ)... So, Sam has no inclination to be a part of haircut night, and she is welcome to be excused. The Gorda was first to volunteer...As the longest-haired cat in the house, she is constantly the victim of her own hair...Be it using the litter, cleaning food from her neck, avoiding litter stuck between her hairy paws, it is all a challenge to the Gorda...So, she loves the hair to come off, and was in utter bliss for the majority of the haircut...until, until - the legs. Turns out none of the cats is a big fan of leg shaving. All sorts of relaxed throughout the back process, they each reached saturation with the whole deal by the legs and tummies...
Here's the result...top row, L-R: pre-shave, Brandon post-shave, The Gorda post-shave...bottom row, L-R: Jonah post-shave, FJ post-shave, and Sam never needing a shave...

So, Jonah has been getting beat up on (beat up upon? beat upon?) by the other two male cats, and occasionally both of the girls...So, sources on the internet suggest the magic of squirt guns to discourage them from their antagonistic and offensive behaviors...Theory is that they just associate the awfulness of being struck by water to the situation itself, but never quite get around to realizing that it was you, and so they bear no resentment toward you...So, like any good person would, I wrote up my little shopping list and weighed out the miniscule pro's and con's between Target and Walmart for this particular excursion. Target pretty much always wins. So, I pumped to Target for a bunch of hygiene supplies, two enormous bags of dry cat food, and 2 squirt guns.... Searching through the toy section, weaving between a crying girl who just hit her head on the cart and the whiny boy who wanted to go home, I come upon THE Target employee that, obvious even to the untrained eye, takes her job very, very seriously...All adorned in her red shirt, tan pants, and pricing gun, she answers my request for directions to the squirt gun aisle with the most haughty laugh I have heard in a while...Apparently she thought I was last to find out that Target doesn't carry them because they resemble real guns. Well, I'll be. I guess I just never really put two and two together. Am I the last to know?

30 nov 2007...Went to Bremen, Germany this month as part of a concert tour of the Albany Ensemble. Awesome place on the North Sea...Rainy, grey, and 40 degrees pretty much the whole time...Lovely people that were comfortable enough to be freely nosey and into your business the minute they enter a room, and were always shy and smiley when they bid their habitual goodbyes upon leaving...Click to hear a bunch of street sounds from the city of Bremen...Click to see a Lufthansa 77 landing at the Frankfurt International Airport...

27 Nov 2007...Thanksgiving!! Here are some family pics...above, Tom Turkey was found in a compromising position in the kitchen sometime after Thanksgiving dinner...The other pics are of Cody on a bender last New Year's Eve...

So, the best thing ever...My littlest brother, Tyler, proposed to his awesome girlfriend, Kacie, the day after Thanksgiving...Kacie is a big fan of game night, and Tyler had cooked up a great scheme to have all the brothers and some close friends there on this unsuspecting night... He schemed Laura into suggesting Hangman for the next game, to which everyone, privy to the proposal plans, quickly agreed...Finally, on the 5th or so round, Tyler put up a puzzle on the white board that was to read "KACIE, WILL YOU MARRY ME" when it was all filled in...She was surprised, she said yes, her ring is awesome, and my brother is a happy little bitch.

Also, drove to and from Fort Wayne, Indiana during the weekend for my friend, Mary's wedding. Turns out it is as flat and non-East-coast as I had thought...Truly the Bible Belt from Indiana straight down Routes 80 and 90 into Eastern Pennsylvania, I couldn't believe it!...It was a lovely wedding and a lovely drive...

23 Nov 2007...Old pictures, hanging out at Justin's after hours, that I finally organized out of some random, generic folder...

Also, here are pictures from a night in August 2007 when we were privileged at Justin's to be visited by jazz pianist, Henry Butler who hung out for the night after playing a concert and sat in for a set. Here he is playing with my brother, Trevor.

22 Nov 2007...I am slowly accepting the impending winter temperatures, though I AM looking forward to my first winter ever as an adult not having to pay heat...So far, we have been able to keep windows open because the heat is steaming so toastily...Yeah, that's pretty nice...Here are some pics to help me mourn the summer - me at Coney Island, and hanging out at the Saratoga Jazz Fest and Sesame Village with Laurel and da boyzzzz, Myles and Marcelle...

20 Nov 2007...I was informed today of the sad fact that I have no friends.

Justin's Fabulous MONDAY PIANO BAR, 9/25......We celebrated LIBRA NIGHT!!!! It was my birthday (9/25), and we celebrated the birthdays of melli rose (9/29), joan taub, joe griffiths (9/25), andrea schultz, john frederick (10/10), eugenio villareal (9/28), and cecilli simpson (10/1)...I couldn't have asked for a better birthday....Everyone was so enthusiastic and wonderful - I can not thank everyone enough for being there for the celebrations!...Here are some highlights from the night: (click to play the mp3)

-Nate performs Crocodile Rock and rocks a little too hard...He knocks a variety of items off the piano....

-Jane Hawkins performs a wonderful rendition of "I Cover the Waterfront"

-Nate performs "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and never quite gets the pronunciation of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" quite right....Here is a medley of those mispronounced moments, and notice that the last time it come around, I have to slow down the music to make sure that at least once I get it right!

-A celebration of LIBRA birthdays, it just wouldn't be right without a few birthday songs...Here is the whole room singing "Happy Birthday" to Joe

-Melli rose sings Tori Amos' "Leather" in her acclaimed Libran style....Melli, I love you!! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

-Nate gets a little bit into "GOD Bless the Child" and sings a big diva rendition....here's a little sample...

-Katie Lurie joins Nate (as is our old tradition) on "Desperado" with Steve Leon at the piano....Katie, you are awesome in so many ways, not the least of which is as an incredible singing partner....

-Nate's birhtday dedication song....One of my favorite old Billy Joel tunes, "I've Loved These Days"

-AJ dedicates "My Funny Valentine" to the SUNY crew!!

-Eileen, you rock you big MONA!....Hear us singing "Every Breath You Take" in great harmony, or hear Eileen's now-famous Ragtime Piece on the piano!

________________________________________________

Picture it...Justin's, 9/18.......Certainly the highlight of the evening was the 35-minute 80's medley, glued together by snipets of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as we all reminisced....We were a pretty small crowd, as all the Larkfest weekend fun had basically...(how did Justin's waiter, Aleph, put it??)...left everyone just useless piles of poop come Monday...Nonetheless, we managed to have a fantastic time...Eileen is also gracing the patrons of Justin's with not only her waitressing service, but her fantastic harmonies, and I am trying to convince her to bring her fiddle along soon... She was lucky enough to be serenaded by an original song I made up on the spot about her braids....Damn, I wish I had been taping already....Please check in as I will be updating this biweekly or so with recorded highlights from each week's shows...
